Hero’s Journey
“Optimism is choosing to interpret reality through the lens that goodness, growth, and repair are more fundamental than decay and failure.”
-Unknown
For years, I’ve wrestled with communicating the intended depth of this word “optimism” that’s been part of the core message of Tschetter Group since the beginning. I’ve bristled against the abstract, motivational-poster sense of the word, searching for a more grounded way, one that includes inevitable wrong turns, unexpected delays, and messes that are prevalent in our world and lived experience. Several weeks ago, one of my closest friends sent me this quote and it hit me as just about right.
Sometimes forward progress is hard to see, especially when we’re right in the middle of a mess or difficulty. However, with some distance, or perhaps a wide enough aperture, we notice new things—some might say more fundamental things—about reality.
We were reminded of this watching the build-up to and now unfolding NASA’s Artemis II mission, the first crewed flight toward the Moon in more than fifty years. What’s easy to miss in the headlines is how long and uneven the road back has been. There have been delays, redesigns, and moments where the entire program appeared to stall. And yet, the direction was never really in doubt. The work continued methodically and deliberately, with a compelling long-term objective in view.
Astronaut Victor Glover, a member of the Artemis II crew, has spoken about what it means to look back at Earth from that distance. Everything looks different—quieter, more connected. The noise that feels so urgent down here gets very small, very quickly.
We sense that most people, conscious or not, are longing for a similarly inspiring perspective. Distinct from escape from or ignorance of challenges, this is a view through a wide enough lens to promote a sense of peace and clarity. A new way of seeing. The ability to step back from the headlines, market swings, and daily noise to perceive what is going on beneath the surface. From that vantage point, new things start to show up.
As we know from our favorite books, movies, and art, the ingredients for a good story include beauty and inspiring wins but they also include plenty of difficulty and challenge. The story is made meaningful and good by a central character or hero’s willingness to be with and persevere through some kind of adversity, to adapt without losing sight of the destination, and to trust that, while not always visible in the moment, goodness and progress win out over time. This is the hero’s journey.
We’ve always believed our clients are the heroes of the Tschetter Group story. Yes, astronauts are heroes, but so are you. You are the ones building something, protecting something, and making decisions today so that future versions of yourselves, and the people you care about, have more freedom, flexibility, and confidence. That’s the journey you invite us on and we’re privileged to be part of.
Every client’s path is different. Your goals, your timeline, and your priorities are your own. Our role is not simply to navigate markets, but to understand where you’re headed and help ensure that the plan we’ve built together remains aligned with that direction, especially during periods that feel less certain.
That’s what optimism in life and money means to us. Not a posture of ignorant cheerfulness, and not blind confidence that markets will cooperate in the near term. Instead, it’s a grounded trust, based on our experience and evidence, that a tailored and disciplined approach to good investments and planning, applied consistently over time, and rooted in a careful listening of where you want to go, will produce a flourishing version of wealth.
How can we better advocate for you and your journey? Who do you know that might need a helpful perspective?
If there’s something or someone on your mind, a change in your circumstances, a question about the road ahead, or simply a desire to talk through what you’re seeing, we’d welcome the conversation. The door is always open.
With optimism,
Dustin Brumbaugh, CFA®, ADVISOR | CEO/CIO
